The Hotel Allen was the first concrete building built in Pennsylvania in 1857 on property that was donated by D&H Canal company. The builder and architect was Henry Heath, the same man that designed and built Grace Episcopal Church. The concrete was brought to Honesdale in canal boats as ballast from Rosendale Cement in Rosendale, NY. It was opened in 1858 by owner Samuel Allen. A terrible fire there in 1978 claimed the lives of 12 occupants. In 1985 The Dime Bank opened their main offices at the site of the former hotel.
Looking down 9th St. towards Main, take note of the travel agency sign on the Masonic building and write on the name of it on line #15.
